Plano ISD expects to finish $58.4 million in renovations at Murphy Middle School and Plano East Senior High School by the first half of 2027.

Tony Pearson, director of planning and new construction, told the Plano ISD Board of Trustees at a Tuesday, Aug. 18, work session that the projects are on schedule. Construction at Plano East began in February 2025 and includes renovation of about 7,000 square feet in Building D, major locker room overhauls and two new gym floors, the Murphy Monitor reported.

The Murphy Monitor photographed workers continuing construction on Building D adjacent to Rusty Franklin Field at Plano East on Aug. 27.

The work falls under the district's 2022 bond package, a $1.4 billion program covering 136 projects across five construction phases. As of an Oct. 21, 2025, board meeting, 46 of those projects were complete, 21 were under construction and 23 were in the design phase, according to Community Impact. Pearson reported at that same meeting that 20 Phase 1 and Phase 2 projects had been completed since the district's previous update, on June 10, 2025. Community Impact reported in October 2025 that the district anticipated completing the Plano East renovation by January 2027. The more recent Aug. 18 update puts the target at the first half of 2027.

The $58.4 million contract figure covers both campuses combined. The renovation scope specific to Murphy Middle School was not detailed in available reporting.

Murphy Middle School closed briefly in October 2025 for environmental remediation after two independent air quality assessments found elevated humidity in some areas. Neither assessment detected black mold, the school said at the time. Remediation included carpet replacement, HVAC cleaning, surface disinfecting, window resealing and installation of dehumidifiers and air purifiers. The district received environmental certification Oct. 14, 2025, and students returned the following Monday.

All 136 bond projects are set to wrap up by 2029. The Plano ISD Board of Trustees posts meeting schedules on its website for families who want to track renovation progress.
