Adults preparing for the GED can attend free classes Monday evenings at Wylie’s Rita and Truett Smith Public Library.

The program began Sept. 14 and includes 30 sessions scheduled through May 2027, according to The Wylie Times. Classes meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the library, 300 Country Club Road.

Michelle Bellamy teaches the course, which covers mathematical reasoning, reasoning through language arts, science and social studies. Bellamy directs the master’s program in information technology and management at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Participants receive practice materials to use between classes. Bellamy also offers Thursday virtual office hours for additional help, according to a City of Wylie announcement.

Funding comes from Project Judy, an initiative supported by an anonymous donation to the Friends of the Wylie Library. The Friends announced an initial $111,000 gift at the Feb. 23 Library Advisory Board meeting.

The donation supports several literacy efforts. Project Judy also paid for the library’s outreach van and supports English as a Second Language instruction, Wylie News reported.

Library Director Ofilia Barrera told the newspaper that the donation was intended to expand literacy and create opportunities for people facing disadvantages.

Passing the GED tests allows eligible Texans to earn a Certificate of High School Equivalency, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Prospective students should contact the library to confirm enrollment availability and class dates, including scheduled breaks. Call 972-516-6250 or email [email protected].
