Marked white SUVs will roll through Sachse neighborhoods after dark for a week starting Sunday as Atmos Energy conducts natural gas safety surveys across the city.
The surveys run nightly from Sunday, Sept. 6, through Saturday, Sept. 12, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., the City of Sachse said on X on Friday, Sept. 4. The city did not list specific streets or neighborhoods to be surveyed.
Atmos Energy, the natural gas provider for Sachse, uses mobile leak detection units during the surveys. The company's Mid-Tex Division serves the broader Dallas-Fort Worth region. Notices issued by other North Texas cities for similar Atmos surveys have described the vehicles as white SUVs with flashing lights labeled with an Atmos Energy logo or "Utility Contractor." The Sachse notice confirmed only that the vehicles would be marked white SUVs.
What to do if you smell gas
Leave the area first.
From a safe distance, call 911 and then Atmos Energy's 24-hour toll-free emergency line at 866-322-8667. Atmos Energy says on its safety page that a trained technician will respond immediately to investigate at no cost.
The company advises residents not to rely on smell alone to detect a leak. Hissing sounds near a gas line or dead vegetation over a pipeline can also signal trouble. Atmos Energy tells customers to use any of their senses, including sight, sound and smell, to check for signs of a leak. The company also urges residents not to assume someone else will make the call.
The city has shared the same Atmos emergency number before. A December 2025 winter weather notice from Sachse listed 866-322-8667 as a key contact for gas emergencies.
