Murphy's Historic Resources Advisory Committee met Monday, July 27, to hear updates on the city's pioneer cemeteries, archives, and public history displays. The quarterly meetings are open to the public, and this volunteer board has been quietly preserving a community story that stretches back to 1846.
The seven-member committee gathered at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Murphy City Hall, 206 North Murphy Road. The agenda listed subcommittee reports from three working groups (Archives, Cemetery, and Display Case), plus approval of minutes from the committee's May 26 work session.

Who's on the committee
Chair Kendra Walden leads the board, which includes Vice Chair Julie Johnson, Secretary Heather Jones, and members Jaskiran Kaur, Bill Dickenson, Erin Pietrasik, and Susy Gulley. Stephanie Scott-Sims, the city's planning manager, serves as staff liaison.
The committee advises Murphy City Council on preserving the history of a community once known as Old Decatur and Maxwell's Branch. The first settlers, Comfort and Lydia McMillen and their six children, arrived from Arkansas in 1846. The town was renamed Murphy in 1888 after William Murphy donated land for the train depot on the St. Louis Southwestern Railway.
What the subcommittees do
The city's official page describes the HRAC as a quarterly advisory board focused on preservation. Murphy has seven official Texas Historical Commission markers in Collin County and four pioneer family cemeteries, including the Murphy Family Cemetery, where William Murphy set aside burial land in 1872, and the McMillen Cemetery, which earned Historic Texas Cemetery designation in 2010.
The Archives subcommittee reviewed items and discussed procedures at the May 26 work session. The Cemetery subcommittee oversees stewardship of those historic burial grounds. Specifics on current Display Case projects have not been released.
How residents can participate
The HRAC meets on the fourth Monday of January, April, July, and October at 6 p.m. at Murphy City Hall. The next meeting falls on Monday, October 26. Public comments are limited to three minutes per speaker.
