Sachse High School students are one step closer to practicing on an 80-yard indoor turf field, now that Garland ISD has opened the first of seven identical Multi-Program Activity Centers funded by its $1.279 billion 2023 Bond Program.
The district held a ribbon-cutting Saturday, Aug. 8, at Naaman Forest High School, unveiling a 62,000-square-foot indoor practice facility paired with a 30,000-square-foot fieldhouse. Sachse High is among the remaining six campuses where construction is underway, with the district describing several as "nearing the final stages."
Sachse is next in line. Garland ISD broke ground on the Sachse campus MAC in July 2025, and an exterior photo on the district's bond project page from June 2026 shows construction progress, though the district has not announced a specific opening date.
What's inside
Each MAC includes an indoor turf field with divider nets and band observation platforms, plus a fieldhouse with locker rooms for outdoor sports, coaches' offices, a weight room, meeting space, laundry facilities and athletic training areas. The facilities also house storage for fine arts equipment and flexible space for special education programs.
"Safety and security means keeping them out of the sun. North Texas weather is unpredictable, and our kids need to be protected," Superintendent Ricardo López said at the Aug. 8 ceremony.
López emphasized the centers serve more than athletes. The district said the Naaman Forest MAC provides space for fine arts rehearsals, special education programming and other campus activities alongside athletics.
Bond program delivering across seven campuses
Voters approved both Proposition A (safety and facility upgrades) and Proposition B (the Multi-Program Activity Centers) in 2023, allowing the district to combine originally separate fieldhouse renovations and indoor facility projects into one structure per campus. All seven Garland ISD high schools are receiving a MAC: Naaman Forest, Sachse, Rowlett, South Garland, North Garland, Garland and Lakeview Centennial.
State Rep. Rhetta Bowers, whose House District 113 covers parts of Garland, Rowlett and Mesquite, attended the Naaman Forest opening. Board President Wes Johnson told attendees the facility gives "future students another tool to even build on that excellence themselves."
What's next for Sachse families
The district has not set a public date for the Sachse High MAC ribbon-cutting. Garland ISD's bond project page lists all seven facilities as under construction, with Naaman Forest the only one open as of August.
