Sachse High School will dedicate its gymnasium in honor of Steve Hammerle, the school's inaugural principal who opened the campus in 2002, during a public ceremony on Sunday, August 2, at 2 p.m.

The Garland ISD campus, which serves about 2,900 students in grades 9-12, announced the event on its official X account on Friday, July 24, calling it a "historic occasion" and inviting the entire "Mustang Community" to attend.

Past and present Sachse students and members of the broader Sachse community are all welcome at the ceremony, which will take place at the school, located at 3901 Miles Rd. Sachse residents in Dallas County are zoned to Garland ISD schools, including Sachse High School, according to the City of Sachse. Residents in Collin County attend Wylie ISD schools.

A school built from scratch

Hammerle led Sachse High School from its very first day. Construction on the campus began in 2000, and the school opened in fall 2002 with only freshmen and sophomore classes, according to the Garland ISD school history page. Hammerle guided the school as it grew into a full four-year campus.

His wife, Dr. Marlene Hammerle, served simultaneously as principal of Rowlett High School, another Garland ISD campus. Both retired after long tenures, according to the district's history page.

The gym naming places Hammerle's legacy in a permanent, visible spot for every student who walks through the building. The school's current principal is Dr. Ashley Wong.
