Sachse Public Library cardholders will lose access to hoopla, the digital borrowing platform for ebooks, audiobooks and comics, on Thursday, Oct. 1.
Wednesday, Sept. 30 is the final day to borrow new content through hoopla with a Sachse library account. There is no grace period for new checkouts after that date, the Sachse Journal reported.
Titles checked out on or before Sept. 30 will remain available for the full length of their standard loan period, according to the library's official notice. Once those items are automatically returned on their due dates, no further hoopla content will be accessible.
Why the change
The library said hoopla's pay-per-use pricing model caused the platform to hit its daily borrowing cap early most days, locking out patrons who tried to check out content later in the day. By consolidating around Libby by OverDrive, the library said it can offer a wider, staff-curated catalog through a single app.
Libby works differently from hoopla. It uses a one-user-per-copy lending model, similar to checking out a physical book, so patrons place a hold if a title is already checked out. Hoopla allowed simultaneous access but came with that daily cap.
The library's Libby collection includes more than 40,000 ebook and digital audiobook titles through a partnership with the Northeast Texas Digital Consortium, along with digital magazines and comic books. Libby is also the only platform that supports Kindle-compatible ebook lending for U.S. public libraries, giving it broader device compatibility than hoopla offered.
Other digital options
Libby is not the only platform still available. Sachse cardholders also have access to CloudLibrary and the E-Reads Texas Collection, which together offer more than 20,000 ebooks and audiobooks.
The library plans to add Kanopy, a film-streaming service, with an estimated launch in November. Kanopy's catalog includes more than 31,000 films, TV series, documentaries and independent titles, with no shared daily borrowing cap.
Save your history
Once hoopla access ends, borrowing history tied to a Sachse library account will disappear. The library is urging patrons to log in to the hoopla app or website, go to "My Hoopla," select "History" and screenshot or write down previously borrowed titles before Sept. 30.
Patrons who want to suggest titles for the Libby collection can use the "Notify Me" smart tag inside the app or submit a request through the library's online purchase suggestion form. Unlike hoopla, the Libby collection is curated by library staff and shaped by patron suggestions.
