Every Sachse student who rides a Garland ISD bus must now scan an ID badge when boarding and again when stepping off, a requirement that took effect Monday, Aug. 10, the first day of the 2026-27 school year.
The two-point scan creates a timestamped record of each student's transit. Previously, confirmation that a child boarded the correct bus or exited at the right stop traveled through a phone chain involving drivers, campus staff and parents. The scanning system moves that information into a digital record capable of generating alerts.
There is no opt-out.
Who's affected
The badge policy covers every Garland ISD student from pre-K through 12th grade. Students must wear a visible ID badge at all times on campus and scan it for every bus ride, including field trips. Sachse-area campuses under the policy include Sachse High School, B.G. Hudson Middle School, John W. Armstrong Elementary and Robert B. Sewell Elementary.
As we reported July 29, the district announced the expansion over the summer. Individual campuses handled badge distribution ahead of the first day.
What parents of younger riders should expect
For elementary-age children, the scan-in/scan-out routine may take several weeks to become automatic, according to Sachse Journal. A pre-K student cannot independently manage a badge and scanning procedure without help from bus drivers, campus staff and parents at home.
Sachse bus routes frequently run along the Highway 78 corridor and through residential neighborhoods toward Wylie and Rowlett, putting some younger students on longer rides. That makes the scan confirmation especially relevant for parents who want assurance their child boarded and exited safely.

Garland ISD directed families with questions about scanning data, notifications or lost and damaged badges to contact their campus or reach the district through ParentSquare, the district's official communication platform. The district also posted badge policy details on its Armstrong Elementary campus page.
Garland ISD posted on X on July 28 that badges would be distributed by each campus and that the scanning requirement applies to field trips as well as daily routes. Parents can direct additional questions to their campus office or through ParentSquare at garlandisd.net.
