Wylie residents could soon have packages dropped at their doorstep by drone.

The permit is one vote away.

The Wylie Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval of a special-use permit for Wing, a drone delivery company owned by Google parent Alphabet, to operate from a half-acre site at 707 Cooper Drive. The commission acted during its July 21 meeting at City Hall, Wylie News reported July 30. The zoning change would move the property from Commercial Corridor to Commercial Corridor-Special Use Permit.

The Wylie City Council will take a final vote on the permit Tuesday, August 11, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 300 Country Club Road.

What the site would look like

The Wylie Economic Development Corporation filed the application on Wing's behalf. According to the zoning application, a site plan prepared by Kimley-Horn and Associates, submitted June 25, shows a landing pad, a 20-by-8-foot shipping container, a battery energy storage system, drone rack equipment, and a six-foot screen fence on the property at Lot 6, Block A of Wylie Industrial Park.

Wing's drones fly at about 65 feet, travel up to 60 mph, and can deliver packages weighing up to 2.5 pounds within a 12-mile radius. Orders placed through the Walmart or Wing app arrive in under 30 minutes, lowered to the ground by tether.

"We set up what is called a nest and from there, customers can place an order in the Walmart app or the Wing app, and you can order pretty much everything," Catherine Lovett, a Wing Aviation representative, said at a June 17 public meeting in Hernando, Mississippi, describing the same hub model proposed for Wylie.

Not Wylie's first drone push

The EDC announced a partnership with Flytrex, a separate drone delivery company, in September 2025 to facilitate drone delivery in the city. Wing's proposed station would be the second drone delivery site pursued by the EDC. Nearby, DroneUp began on-demand package delivery in the Murphy area in November 2024, according to FAA records.

Wing already operates from 20 Walmart stores across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, having launched its first DFW service in Frisco in September 2023. The company has completed more than one million home deliveries nationwide and plans to reach 270-plus locations by 2027, according to Supply Chain Dive.

Two more projects advance

The commission also recommended approval of two other special-use permits at the same meeting:

  • A change from Light Industrial to Light Industrial-SUP on 2.0 acres at 31 Steel Road for a warehouse distribution facility (ZC 2026-08).
  • A change from Light Industrial to Light Industrial-SUP on 0.71 acres at 1506 Martinez Lane for a major auto repair shop with vehicle display and sales (ZC 2026-09).

All three cases now move to City Council. The Wing permit is scheduled for the August 11 meeting; council dates for the other two have not been confirmed.

Residents within 200 feet of 707 Cooper Drive were notified of the Wing zoning request. If property owners holding 20% or more of the land within that notification area file a written protest, state law requires a three-fourths council vote for approval.
