Wylie homeowners face an average property tax increase of $317 a year under a proposed budget and tax rate headed for a public hearing and possible vote Tuesday, Sept. 8.
The Wylie City Council is scheduled to hear public comment and vote on both the $183.48 million fiscal year 2027 budget and a proposed tax rate of 59.6554 cents per $100 of assessed value at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at 300 Country Club Road. The meeting agenda, posted Sept. 1 by City Secretary Stephanie Storm, lists votes on both ordinances for the same night.
The proposed rate is 9.77% higher than the current rate of 54.3438 cents per $100. Combined with a 3.11% rise in average home values, the tax bill on a typical Wylie homestead would jump from $2,406.73 to $2,724.14, an increase of $317.41, or 13.19%, according to The Wylie News.
The rate equals the voter-approval rate. No election is required.
Where the money goes
The city would collect $47.78 million in property taxes under the proposal, up $3.6 million from the prior year. Of that increase, about $723,000 would come from new property added to the tax rolls.
Public safety dominates the General Fund. That category accounts for $43.23 million of the $72.87 million General Fund, more than 59% of the total. General government operations are budgeted at $17.28 million, community services at $5.73 million and streets at $5.05 million.
Beyond the General Fund, the budget sets aside $37.07 million for the Utility Fund and $38.32 million for capital projects across all city funds. The city also plans to issue $10.6 million in long-term debt for capital work.
Total revenues are projected at $161.70 million against $180.60 million in expenditures. The budget projects an ending fund balance of $117.94 million across all operating and capital funds.
