Pvt. Aiden Gregory Craig, an 18-year-old Wylie High School graduate who played defensive end for the Pirates, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, after collapsing during a physical fitness test at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. He was 47 days into recruit training.

Craig collapsed Saturday, Aug. 1, during a scheduled fitness evaluation and was rushed to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, according to Marine Corps Times. He died four days later. The Marine Corps has not released a cause of death, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Marine Corps said in a statement Thursday, Aug. 13, when MCRD San Diego publicly identified Craig, that no further information would be released while the investigation continues.

Craig graduated from Wylie High School in May and enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 1. He was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and was roughly halfway through the 13-week boot camp when the medical emergency occurred.

On the football field, Craig recorded 50 tackles during his senior season and earned second-team All-District 9-6A honors at defensive end. He was one of 20 Pirates players selected for the all-district team, the Wylie News reported.

MCRD San Diego confirmed Craig posthumously earned the title of Marine, according to Military.com.

His family said in a statement provided to USNI News on Wednesday, Aug. 12, that they are focused on honoring Craig and supporting one another, and asked for privacy.

The Craig family plans to establish an endowment in his honor through the Wylie ISD Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose endowments have grown to more than $2.7 million since 2002. The foundation funds scholarships for seniors and grants for teachers. Donations toward the Craig endowment can be made at wisdfoundation.org.

The Marine Corps has not announced a timeline for completing its investigation into Craig's death.
