Wylie High School's APEX Legends squad beat a select esports organization 113-111 in the national final Tuesday, July 28, in Orlando, claiming the program's latest national title and capping a season that produced five state championships across the Pirates' esports program.

The three-player team of Oliver Carel, Ryan Clever, and Tristan Drennan fought through six matches against 18 of the country's top squads before edging XPL-WTX Trolls in the championship round.

Two points.

"Words cannot describe how proud I am of our students," esports sponsor Robert Arthur said in the Wylie ISD announcement. "APEX was able to win nationals, our Fortnite team finished sixth out of 48 teams and were the highest-placing high school team, and Rocket League were state champions this year and finished as national semifinalists in Wylie High School's first-ever appearance at nationals."

The APEX Legends team also defended its back-to-back Texas state championship earlier in the season, sweeping Lubbock High School 3-0 in the best-of-five grand finals.

Wylie High's other squads made noise in Orlando, too. The Rocket League team of Zayvion Riley, Chris Cantrell, and Cameron Burk reached the national semifinals after winning the school's first-ever state title in that game with a 4-0 sweep of Westlake High School. The Fortnite duo of Austin Truong and Muzammil Ahsan placed sixth out of 48 teams nationally, the highest finish by any high school team in the bracket.

Drennan added an individual honor during the season, earning a spot on the first-ever all-state esports team in Texas at TexSEF's Texas Undisputed State Championships.

According to USA Today's end-of-season rankings, Wylie High is the No. 14 high school esports program in the country. Over the past two years, the Pirates have combined for five state championships under Arthur, who has led the program for roughly two and a half years.

"We need a second trophy case as we have already surpassed the capacity this one can handle!" Arthur said in May, after the program's state title wins.

The Wylie ISD School Board recognized the esports program as state champions and national qualifiers at its Monday, May 18, regular meeting.
