Wylie High School will offer an Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program in the 2026-27 school year.
Retired Col. Tiffany Feet will serve as Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, and retired Senior Master Sgt. Joel Remsnyder will serve as Aerospace Science Instructor, The Wylie Growl reported Monday, Sept. 14.
The program grew out of an April gathering at Wylie High School where educators, military representatives and community leaders discussed building a unit focused on leadership, service and partnerships with Dyess Air Force Base.
A typical week will split into two days of aerospace science instruction, two days of leadership training and one day of wellness and physical fitness. The instructors stressed the program is not limited to students planning military careers.
"I can't wait to see the confidence they develop as they learn they can do things that they previously thought they were not capable of," Feet told The Wylie Growl.
Remsnyder said the instructor team, students and parents will build the program together. Cadets should expect fun, he added.
One of the most visible goals for the program's first year is training a color guard to present the colors at football games and other major school events.
"We are excited to bring this new tradition to a school that already has such deep-rooted heritage and faithful fans," Remsnyder told The Wylie Growl.
Beyond the color guard, cadets may participate in drill competitions, community service projects, drone competitions, archery, and physically demanding Raider events that include endurance runs, obstacle courses and team carries. Qualified graduates may be eligible to enlist at an advanced rank, and their experience can strengthen applications for college ROTC programs, service academies and scholarships.
Wylie High School enrolls about 1,578 students in grades 9-12, according to state enrollment data compiled by the Texas Tribune. Federal guidelines require host schools to maintain participation of 10% of the student body, or 100 students, whichever is smaller, in order to keep a JROTC unit, according to a Congressional Research Service report most recently updated in January 2026. The Air Force operated 815 JROTC units nationally in fiscal year 2025.
No specific enrollment deadline or first day of class has been announced. Families can contact the program through Wylie High School for more information.
