Wylie ISD delayed both varsity football openers by 30 minutes Tuesday, Aug. 25, because temperatures across the Dallas-Fort Worth area have exceeded 100 degrees for more than a week.
The Pirates kicked off at 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. at Richardson's Eagle-Mustang Stadium against JJ Pearce. The Wylie East Raiders hosted Richardson at Wylie ISD Stadium at the same adjusted time in a matchup of defending district champions.
The district announced the change Monday night, Aug. 24, giving fans less than 24 hours' notice before the Week 1 openers.
The National Weather Service's Fort Worth office had extended an extreme heat warning through 9 p.m. Tuesday, with highs expected to reach 107 degrees, according to the Dallas Morning News. The NWS forecast called for temperatures to stay in the triple digits until around 9 p.m., meaning even the delayed 7:30 kickoff fell inside the warning window.
North Texas has been under a continuous extreme heat warning since Aug. 18.
JV and freshman schedule for Thursday
The sub-varsity slate for both programs is set for Thursday, Aug. 27:
Wylie Pirates
- JV vs. JJ Pearce, 6 p.m. at Wylie (home)
- Freshman White at JJ Pearce, 6 p.m.
- Freshman Maroon at JJ Pearce, 7:30 p.m.
Wylie East Raiders
- Blue JV at Richardson, 6 p.m.
- White freshman vs. Allen at Lowery Freshman Center, 5:30 p.m.
- Blue freshman vs. Richardson at Wylie East High School, 5:30 p.m.
