Wylie police and firefighters will meet neighbors over free hot dogs, bounce houses and fireworks at the city's annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
The event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Olde City Park, 112 S. Ballard Ave., in downtown Wylie. Admission is free.
Community Relations Officer Alexandra Waters said the goal is to unite residents and raise awareness of crime prevention, according to the city's event page. Waters said the department wants to promote a strong network of involved citizens working alongside police to drive the crime rate lower.
The full lineup includes public safety displays and activities, free hot dogs, chips and drinks, bounce houses, pony rides, face painting and Back the Blue stickers. A helicopter landing is also planned, pending availability. The evening wraps with a brief fireworks display.
Wylie Police and Wylie Fire Rescue personnel will be on hand to talk with families, answer questions and show off equipment. Children can get up close to fire trucks and patrol vehicles while parents connect with officers and firefighters from their own neighborhoods.
After the event, organizers encourage residents to turn on their porch lights and spend time with neighbors. The tradition is meant as a visible show of unity against crime across the city.
National Night Out is a program of the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), a nonprofit crime prevention organization that has partnered with law enforcement agencies nationwide since 1981. Wylie has hosted the event at Olde City Park in the same format since at least 2016.
Neighborhoods, HOAs and businesses that want to register as participants or schedule a visit from Wylie Police or Wylie Fire Rescue can contact Officer Brigitte Sierra at [email protected].
Street parking along Ballard Avenue and surrounding blocks fills quickly during downtown events.
