The Wylie Parks and Recreation Board will walk its parks system Monday, Aug. 10, starting at 6 p.m., giving the seven-member advisory panel a ground-level look at facilities ahead of a November bond election that includes $20 million for park projects.
The Annual Tour, posted on the city's official meetings calendar, has appeared on the board's schedule since at least the May 11 meeting. No route has been published. Residents who want details can contact Wylie Parks and Recreation at 972-516-6340 or [email protected].
Board Chair Nick Puente, re-elected at the board's July 13 meeting, and newly elected Vice Chair Scott Hevel will lead the walkthrough. The board advises City Council on park improvements, naming, ordinances, and nonprofit league matters across a system that includes Founders Park, Olde City Park, Community Park, Birmingham Farms Park, the Wylie Recreation Center, and multiple athletic complexes and pavilions.
Bond vote follows one day later
The tour is scheduled one day before City Council takes formal action Tuesday, Aug. 11, on a proposed $100.5 million bond package for the November ballot. Mayor Matthew Porter organized the package into four propositions: $25 million for public safety facilities, $25.5 million for downtown improvements and Sachse Road completion, $30 million for public works, and $20 million for park projects.
Approximately $10 million of the public works component would be supported through the city's utility fund rather than property taxes.
Board also approved fall events
At its July 13 regular meeting, the board unanimously approved permits for several nonprofit events in Wylie parks:
- Saturday, Aug. 15 — WAYS Back to School Bash fundraiser at Founders Park
- Saturday, Oct. 3 — Wylie ISD Council of PTAs "Back the Future" fundraiser at Olde City Park
- Sunday, Oct. 25 — WAYS 7v7 Tournament at Founders Park
- Saturday, Nov. 21 — Connection Point Church's Fifth Annual Run for the Fatherless 5K/Fun Run at Founders Park
