Wylie quarterback Jadin Karleskint completed 15 of 17 passes for 248 yards and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs routed Lubbock Monterey 49-3 on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Lowrey Field.

The Bulldogs scored on their first six possessions and built a 42-0 halftime lead. Monterey managed just 3 yards of total offense before the break.

Coach Clay Martin said he was proud of how the team went back to work after a tough opener, calling Monterey a good team but crediting his players' execution and resilience, according to Wylie Bulldog Athletics.

The blowout answered a question Martin raised after the Bulldogs' 13-7 season-opening loss to Brownwood. "All of the problems we had on Friday night are fixable," he said Friday, Sept. 4, in a preview of the Monterey matchup.

Those problems looked fixed fast.

Receiver Blaze Ruffin caught four passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns, including a 61-yard strike from Karleskint on Wylie's opening drive. Sophomore Jackston Williams added four catches for 106 yards and his first varsity touchdown, a 20-yard connection in the second quarter.

Williams hauled in catches of 42 and 33 yards during a 99-yard, seven-play drive that started from the Wylie 1-yard line after a 61-yard Monterey punt.

"Very special," Williams said of his first varsity score. "It took a little longer than I expected but I just came out here and did my job. This will keep me elevated and motivated."

The defense was just as dominant. Landry Pate and Carter Nelson smothered a Monterey fake-punt attempt at the Plainsmen 12, setting up Maylon Green-Rhodes' first Bulldogs touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Karleskint. Kutter Womack recovered a fumble in the second quarter that led to another score.

Monterey alternated quarterbacks, with freshman Hayden Dewbre briefly knocked out of the game. After gaining a first down on its opening drive, Monterey followed with five three-and-outs and the fumble.

Running back Cooper Jones rushed 12 times for 77 yards and scored Wylie's first rushing touchdown of the season on a 15-yard run in the second quarter. Backup quarterback Myles McCarty completed all four of his passes for 59 yards and a touchdown, and added a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Wylie finished with 473 total yards, zero turnovers and 24 first downs. Monterey gained 156 of its 159 total yards in the second half. The Plainsmen's only points came on a 35-yard field goal by Cam Martinez in the third quarter.

Martin substituted freely after halftime. Wylie attempted only five passes in the second half and none in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs move to 1-1 with 56 points scored and 16 allowed through two games. Wylie travels to Wolfforth to face Frenship in Week 3. The Tigers beat Lubbock-Cooper 50-17 in their opener before falling 44-13 to Liberty. Defending Class 4A Division I champion Stephenville visits Sandifer Stadium in Week 4.
