Sachse residents who want a say in how the city grows have until Friday, Aug. 14, to apply for one of seven volunteer advisory seats, including a spot on the Planning and Zoning Commission that reviews every development proposal before it reaches the City Council.

The stakes are real. Sachse is carrying 226 registered construction and development projects valued at roughly $596.3 million, according to permit data reported by the Sachse Journal in July. The 134-acre Station mixed-use development alone, along the President George Bush Turnpike between Miles Road and Merritt Road, is a $500 million project bringing more than 1,000 residential units, a 34-acre park and new retail.

The deadline was confirmed in a city news flash posted Thursday, Aug. 6.

The P&Z Commission reviews zoning requests, plats and comprehensive planning efforts. The other six bodies accepting applications are the Animal Shelter Board, Board of Adjustment, Economic Development Corporation Board, Library Board, Municipal Development District Board and Parks and Recreation Board.

As we reported July 31, the city opened the recruitment call but had not yet specified the deadline.

Each board makes recommendations to the City Council, which retains final decision-making authority. The Parks and Recreation Board advises on park improvements, recreational programs and trail development. The Library Board weighs in on library services, policies and long-range planning.

Board members are appointed by the City Council and serve staggered terms. Most positions require applicants to be qualified voters and residents of Sachse, though specific eligibility requirements vary by board.

The City Council will appoint new members after the deadline closes, though no specific appointment date has been announced. The Parks and Recreation Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers at 3815-B Sachse Rd., and the Library Board meets on the second Monday at 7 p.m. in the same location.
