The Sachse Public Library and Garland ISD have formalized their first-ever joint literacy partnership, according to the Sachse Journal, confirmed at the library's Summer Reading Challenge wrap-up on Friday, July 31. The timing is deliberate: Garland ISD's 2026-27 school year began Monday, Aug. 10.
The arrangement connects library programming to district families who might not otherwise visit, while giving Garland ISD a community site for learning outside school hours. The district announced the initiative in May as a three-city effort that also includes the Garland and Rowlett public libraries, but the Sachse wrap-up event marked the partnership's formal close for summer and signaled its continuation into the school year.
Garland ISD described the effort in its newsroom announcement as the first time the district has partnered with the cities and their libraries to expand summer reading. The challenge ran June 1 through July 31, with a districtwide goal of 500,000 reading minutes logged through Beanstack, the district's online reading platform.
What the wrap-up looked like
The Send-Off Party ran 10 a.m. to noon at 3815 Sachse Rd., drawing families for hands-on STEM activities from the Perot Museum of Nature and Science's TECH Truck, a mobile unit that travels to schools and libraries across the region. The first 200 attendees received free drinks from Simply Sippin', a vintage beverage trailer on the library lawn.
Prize pickup continued through Saturday, Aug. 8. Grand prizes included a Raspberry Pi 4 Desktop Kit for children ages 5-11 who logged 1,600 minutes, a Nintendo Switch for teens who read at least 10 hours and an Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet for adults who finished at least two books.
What comes next
The library is already pivoting toward after-school programming. As we reported Aug. 4, all weekday Storytime sessions are paused through August and resume Tuesday, Sept. 1. The existing Kids Crafternoon program for first- through sixth-graders, which meets Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m., offers a preview of the after-school format the library plans to expand this fall.
No fall details have been released. The library is recruiting volunteers for August through October in three roles: Shelvers, Event Helpers and Craft Helpers.
